IUB & Adorn Launch 'Mahale Voices', First Tri-Lingual Book Preserving Endangered Language
Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) and Adorn Publication have jointly launched a research-based book titled 'Mahale Voices'. This is the first book in three languages - Mahale, Bangla, and English - to document and preserve the endangered Mahale language. The book was unveiled on Wednesday at the DMK Lecture Gallery on the IUB campus in Dhaka.
The book, compiled and translated over three years, features 26 folk stories and 24 poems of the Mahale community. Authored by Towhid Bin Muzaffar, Haroonuzzaman, and Santosh Hemrom, the book uses Roman letters to document the Mahale language, which has no alphabet of its own.
Santosh Hemrom expressed pride in the Mahale community's first book, stating that it ensures their language is documented through the voices of its own people. Haroonuzzaman hopes the book serves as a celebration and a call to action to nurture, protect, and carry forward the Mahale language and its literature. Professor Bokhtiar Ahmed believes the book builds a bridge among languages, helping the community connect their language with more widely used languages.
The book, published by IUB and Adorn Publication, is expected to support the preservation of the Mahale language and promote its literature. It serves as a testament to the community's rich cultural heritage and a call to action for its continued nurturing.
