Istanbul's Caferağa neighborhood transforms with sustainable urban living solutions
A year-long project in Istanbul's Caferağa neighbourhood has aimed to tackle overcrowding, rising temperatures and pollution. Led by WRI Türkiye, the initiative ran from April 2023 to July 2024, focusing on sustainability, inclusivity and better urban living. The work involved local residents and tested practical solutions for cleaner, safer streets. The Livable Caferağa project was part of the broader Deep Dive Cities initiative, which helps cities address long-term urban challenges. WRI Türkiye worked closely with the community to balance cultural vibrancy with Istanbul's climate and mobility goals. Five key improvements were co-designed: safer pedestrian routes, better micromobility options, expanded public transport, smarter parking and streamlined local deliveries.
One early result was a pilot demonstration in Mehmet Ayvalıtaş Square, alongside workshops to build local skills and engagement. The area was also chosen as a priority for Istanbul's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, with plans to create a low-emission zone. By late 2025, residents will see the launch of the new ModaBüs shuttle service, part of wider public transport upgrades. Looking ahead, WRI Türkiye will explore nature-based solutions to reduce urban heat and integrate them into mobility projects across Kadıköy. The lessons from Caferağa will now shape the next phase of the initiative, expanding efforts to the entire district in 2025 and 2026.
The project has set a foundation for broader changes in Kadıköy. New transport services like ModaBüs will roll out from late 2025, while nature-based strategies aim to cool the area and cut emissions. The work in Caferağa will now guide similar efforts across the district over the next two years.
