The tragic death of Elsie Patambag, a 31-year-old mother, and her newborn son on July 31, 2025, at the Lapu-Lapu City District Hospital has left her husband, Mario, heartbroken and questioning the care his wife received.

According to reports, Elsie died due to a rare childbirth complication called amniotic fluid embolism, which led to cardiac arrest. This was Elsie's second childbirth. Her firstborn was delivered normally five years ago.

Mario has accused hospital staff of negligence, claiming that his wife had no complications throughout her prenatal care, which was overseen by the same private doctor who performed the C-section. He alleges that the delivery was performed in a delivery room that lacked sterile conditions and specialized equipment, and that his wife was given unauthorized injections before the operation, which made her feel weak and in pain.

Elsie's sister, Mitchaida Sumampong, was at the hospital and recalls being asked if the patient had a history of asthma or high blood pressure as doctors prepared for an emergency C-section. An internal investigation into the incident has been launched by the hospital.

Lt. Col. Christian Torres, spokesman for the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, has confirmed the receipt of the autopsy request. The autopsy is crucial to establishing the true cause of Elsie's death and determining if foul play or medical malpractice was involved. A blotter report has been filed, and police are reviewing the evidence to decide if a formal complaint against the hospital or its medical personnel will be pursued.

In February this year, a doctor working at the city district hospital was dismissed from service following allegations of verbal abuse towards a patient. However, as the dismissed doctor was a job order employee and not covered by the rules of the Civil Service Commission, no formal charges were filed against her.

Mario and his family have requested an autopsy for Elsie and her newborn at Police Station 3 in Barangay Gun-ob. The findings will be part of the medico-legal report. The hospital has denied negligence, stating that all standard protocols were followed, and that the only injection given was a routine antibiotic skin test, not a medication causing harm.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities also investigating other staff involved in the procedure. Mario expressed his desire for justice for his wife and child, stating, "They treated my wife like dirt. The style was a mess, that's why I'm complaining."
