Peace Prize for Flights - International Law Experts Awarded Remarque Peace Prize

Get ready for some world-class recognition! Renowned British-French law scholar and wordsmith Philippe Sands is set to nab the Erich-Maria-Remarque Peace Prize in the city of Osnabrück next Thursday. The University College London and Harvard visiting professor will pocket a sweet €25,000 for his global impacts.

Who’s the man behind the name?

Our Star Professor

Philippe Sands, a master of law at the University College London and a visiting sage at Harvard, doesn't just teach the stuff; he's also in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, practicing before the International Court of Justice and other international courts.

Tales of a Lifetime

In his book "Return to Lemberg," Sands pens his grandfather's story, a man who beat a hasty retreat after Austria got annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938. The jury chairwoman, Susanne Menzel-Riedl, president of the University of Osnabrück, sang the praises of Sands' tome, commending its illumination of the legal notions of "genocide" and "crimes against humanity."

Osnabrück’s mayor, Katharina Pötter (CDU), hailed Sands' efforts, emphasizing that international law, which provides a moral compass in an interconnected world, urgently needs protection as it faces threats.

Special Prize for "Trialog" Project

This year’s special prize, worth €5,000, goes to the "Trialog" project by Jouanna Hassoun and Shai Hoffmann. Ever since the Hamas terrorist militia mercilessly attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, the duo has embarked on a tour of German schools to engage students in discussions about the complex Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Being Jews of Israeli origin and Muslims of Palestinian origin, they share a deep-rooted interest in peace and shed light on the emotional challenges of the clash.

The Erich-Maria-Remarque Peace Prize has been bestowed every two years by the city of Osnabrück since 1991, making 2023 the 17th award ceremony.

Remarque's Enduring Legacy

Erich Maria Remarque, the celebrated German author who penned "All Quiet on the Western Front", called Osnabrück home. Through the Erich-Maria-Remarque Peace Prize, the city upholds his life work as a testament to his unwavering dedication to peace, literature, and culture.

Prize Recipients

The Erich-Maria-Remarque Peace Prize honors individuals tirelessly working for peace and cultural expression, following Remarque's extraordinary lead. For example, in 2019, an unnamed laureate was recognized for their unwavering commitment to upholding freedom of speech and promoting cultural values, mirroring the values Remarque championed in his writings and despite the adversities he faced in his life.

Cultural Footprint

The Erich-Maria-Remarque Peace Prize is only one part of Osnabrück's broader cultural endeavors, including the Jewish Culture Festival and events hosted by the Erich-Maria-Remarque-Friedenszentrum (Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center). These initiatives reflect Osnabrück's dedication to nurturing peace and supporting cultural diversity.
