India's Class 12 pass rates soar as girls and Science streams lead the way
Pass rates in India's higher secondary exams have steadily climbed over the past 14 years. Between 2010 and 2024, the national average rose from around 83% to 92%, with girls consistently outperforming boys. Meanwhile, the total number of students sitting these exams grew by nearly 48%, reaching 1.58 crore in 2024.
The number of students passing Class 12 exams almost doubled from 7.6 million in 2010 to 12.9 million in 2024. Arts and Science streams dominated the results, accounting for the vast majority of successful candidates. Among boys, Science students formed the largest group, making up over half of all male pass outs by 2024. For girls, Arts had traditionally led, but Science slightly overtook it in 2024.
Regional differences remained stark throughout the period. Kerala and Tamil Nadu maintained the highest pass rates, exceeding 95% by 2024, while Bihar and Uttar Pradesh lagged behind, improving from 60-70% in 2010 to 85-90% in 2024. Southern states generally outperformed northern ones, with Himachal Pradesh and Delhi also showing strong gains due to better education policies and infrastructure.
Pass rates for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) showed significant improvement. The total number of successful SC and ST students doubled between 2011 and 2024, with Arts remaining the most popular stream for both groups. Over time, the gap between their pass rates and the national average narrowed, though a brief spike in 2021 disrupted the trend before stabilising in 2022. Science also gained ground among these groups, nearly matching Arts for SC students by 2024.
The data reveals a clear upward trend in both participation and success in higher secondary exams. More students than ever are passing, with girls leading in performance and Science growing in popularity across all demographics. While regional disparities persist, the overall improvement suggests broader access to education and better outcomes for historically disadvantaged groups.
