Increased expenditures and substantial investments slated for educational institutions in the 2024 Budget
Fürth District Unveils 2024 Budget: "Consistent. Challenging."
The District Administrator of Fürth, Martin Kohler, presented the 2024 budget on December 11, 2023, with a motto of "Consistent. Challenging." The budget, totalling approximately 179.7 million euros, focuses on education, infrastructure, and addressing cost increases in various areas.
One of the key areas of investment is education. The district is set to continue projects started in the areas of digitization and schools. The Stein Gymnasium will undergo an energy-efficient general renovation at a cost of 19.5 million euros, while the Gymnasium Langenzenn will receive a new gym hall at a cost of 19 million euros, starting from 2026. The Realschule Zirndorf will also expand, with an allocation of 8.5 million euros starting from 2025, and a new sports hall will be constructed at the Realschule Langenzenn at a cost of 9.95 million euros, also starting from 2026.
The budget also includes funds for the new construction of the Cadolzburg Gymnasium, with a total cost of 69.7 million euros, with one million euros planned for 2024. Room modules will be acquired for several schools, including the Förderzentrum Cadolzburg (4.6 million euros), Gymnasium Oberasbach (4 million euros), and Gymnasium Langenzenn (3.02 million euros).
Infrastructure projects include the continuation of the construction project to expand the district administration in Zirndorf, with a total cost of 36.5 million euros, of which 4.5 million euros will be incurred in 2024. The district has also earmarked 9 million euros for civil engineering from 2024 to 2027, with the district bearing 5.1 million euros net.
The budgeting process was not without challenges. Strong cost increases in many areas, such as social and youth services, personnel costs, public transportation, and the district surcharge, made it challenging to balance the budget. To address this, the district had to make shifts and cuts, including the complete cancellation of the roof construction of cycle paths and roads in 2024. The district surcharge will be increased by 5.0 percentage points to 46.5% to cover the remaining gap.
The district's personnel costs are expected to increase by around 4 million euros. The district has to pay more to the Middle Franconia district due to the increased tax base. The key allocations that the district receives from the Free State of Bavaria are projected to increase by +0.65 million euros to around 24.6 million euros compared to 2023.
Loans are planned for the district in 2024 (13.5 million euros), 2025 (7 million euros), 2026 (19.5 million euros), and 2027 (4.5 million euros).
The incoming District Administrator of the city of Fürth, Thomas Jung, is set to take office on February 5, 2024. The district's tax base has increased above average by 6.9 percent. Despite the challenges, the budget presents a consistent approach to education and infrastructure, reflecting the motto of "Consistent. Challenging."
