Implementing Strategies for Societal Transformation
In the vibrant world of graphic design, Micky Jordan stands out as an artist with a unique vision and a passion for social change.
Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Jordan found his calling in grassroots organizing work, particularly with the LGBTQ organisation Southerners on New Ground (SONG). This early involvement in social justice movements has shaped his design philosophy, inspiring him to create work that challenges perceptions of race, gender, and sexuality, and often incorporates references from Black media and social movements.
Jordan's style is heavily influenced by post-Modernism, a movement known for its experimental approach to various design elements such as photo cutouts, textures, and text. His work is a fusion of modern aesthetics and a profound understanding of social issues, making it both visually striking and thought-provoking.
One of Jordan's most notable projects is the rebranding of SONG, where he designed a new logo, style guide, fonts, color palette, and other design elements. This rebranding not only gave SONG a fresh, contemporary look but also reinforced their commitment to social justice and activism.
After honing his skills through self-study, Jordan returned to formal education, earning an Undergraduate Certificate before pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design at Sessions College. He found the courses in Layout Design, Print Production, Graphic Design II, UX/UI Design, and Computer Technology particularly challenging, but also the most rewarding.
Today, Jordan is a Junior Graphic Designer at the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA), where he continues to use his talents to contribute to social change. He is also the creator of the podcast "Taking TV Too Seriously," for which he designed the branding, and teaches Graphic Design for Organizing as an instructor for the Social Movement Technologies program.
Jordan's design work extends beyond digital interfaces. He has created a photo series called "Black Joy," a collage-based project that uses a mix of black and white photos of Black people to celebrate and uplift Black culture. Jordan's design goals remain steadfast: to create work that contributes to social change in the world.
