IBM’s Top Scientist Urges Developers to Look Beyond Big Tech for Growth

IBM's Chief Scientist, Ruchir Puri, has advised entry-level software developers to explore career opportunities beyond big tech companies. He highlights the growing demand for software developers across various industries due to the impact of AI.

Puri suggests considering companies like Amazon, which are hiring software engineers to lead industry transformations. Despite an oversaturated talent pool and rapid AI adoption causing hiring uncertainty, positions at non-tech companies can be deeply rewarding. They offer the chance to drive innovation in sectors beyond traditional technology.

AI-driven transformation is creating software development roles across a wide range of industries. These include finance, e-commerce, gaming, and automation. Roles such as AI software development, AI management in e-commerce and process automation, and gameplay programming with an AI focus are currently in high demand.

IBM plans to increase hiring of recent graduates in 2025, despite planning to lay off thousands of employees in the fourth quarter to reallocate resources. The job market for software developers remains challenging, with a decrease in job postings and increased competition among applicants. However, Puri's advice opens up new avenues for software developers to consider, allowing them to be part of transforming fundamental aspects of the global economy.
