Hüfnfeld's top young debaters advance to North Hesse finals after fierce competition
A lively debate competition took place in Hüfnfeld's town hall as part of Jugend debattiert. Students from five local schools competed after winning their in-school contests. The event drew praise from organisers and participants alike.
Mayor Benjamin Tschesnok opened the competition by welcoming the students and encouraging spirited discussions. The debates covered two key topics: whether pet owners should be required to have health insurance for their animals, and if AI should assist in exam marking.
Three rounds were held, with two students arguing for and two against each motion. A jury of teachers assessed their performance based on argumentation, eloquence, persuasiveness, discussion skills, and subject knowledge. Klaus Mirk, a senior teacher and regional coordinator, later highlighted the high standard of the debates.
At the end of the competition, Jonas Gilbert from Hilders won in the lower secondary category, while Moritz Schmidt from Hüfnfeld took first place at the upper secondary level. Both will now represent the area at the North Hesse finals in March.
Regular participants from Landkreis Fulda included Winfriedschule Fulda, Domgymnasium Fulda, and Stiftsschule St. Johann. These schools have confirmed their involvement in 2026, with different year groups competing at various times. However, data on earlier years remains unavailable, making it difficult to assess long-term trends.
The winners will move on to the regional finals, where they will face competitors from across North Hesse. Schools from Landkreis Fulda have already planned their participation for next year's event. The competition continues to provide a platform for students to develop critical thinking and public speaking skills.
