How Yu Zhang's Unlikely Network Redefined Global Collaboration
Yu Zhang arrived in Germany in 1992 with little more than two suitcases. Born in southern China in 1973, she has since built a far-reaching connections across business, politics, and civil society. Her approach to connections is rooted in decades of experience—and it's reshaping how international projects come to life.
Zhang's understanding of connections began in her early years in China. She believes a strong connections should feel like resonance, built on mutual trust rather than one-sided admiration. A common mistake, she notes, is when people look up to successful figures too much and end up diminishing their own worth.
Her three core rules for resilient connections are simple but firm. First, substance matters more than visibility. Second, patience and long-term thinking are essential. Third, trust must grow organically, not by force. Before investing time in a relationship, she asks herself three questions: Can we learn from each other? Can we give honest feedback without offence?Am I willing to help—and can I rely on support in return?
Zhang's connections wasn't strategically planned but developed naturally over 30 years. This became clear in her project Love Storm, which brought together Germany and China. Steinway supplied pianos and musicians, Hainan Airlines arranged flights, and Kühne + Nagel transported a 1.2-ton sculpture. By leveraging her connections, she completed the project with just 25% of the usual budget.
Her approach proves that strong connections don't rely on grand strategies. Instead, they thrive on genuine collaboration and shared purpose.
Zhang's methods have cut costs and streamlined international projects. Her focus on mutual respect and long-term bonds sets her apart in a world often driven by short-term gains. The results speak for themselves—effective, efficient, and deeply connected work across borders.
