How Two Rivals Became Champions in Beyond the River's True Story
A new South African film, Beyond the River, tells the inspiring true story of two unlikely partners who triumphed at the gruelling Dusi Canoe Marathon. The movie follows their journey from clashing backgrounds to a shared victory on the water. Now available on DVD, it includes behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the real-life champions who inspired it. Beyond the River was written by Craig Freimond and Robbie Thorpe, with Freimond directing and Thorpe producing alongside Harriet Gavshon and Ronnie Apteker. The project received funding from multiple sources, including the National Lotteries Commission, the Department of Trade and Industry, the National Film and Video Foundation, and the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission.
The film stars Lemogang Tsipa as Duma Madlala, a young man who turns to canoeing after a brush with the law. Grant Swanby plays Steve Andrews, a nine-time Dusi gold medallist struggling with a failing marriage. Their characters mirror the real-life pairing of Siseko Ntondini and Piers Cruickshanks, who won gold in the 2014 race despite their vastly different upbringings. To prepare for their roles, the actors underwent rigorous canoe training under Olympic coach Shaun Rubenstein. The production also used drones and actual race footage to capture the intensity of the three-day marathon. Stunning landscapes of KwaZulu-Natal serve as a backdrop, highlighting the region's natural beauty. Piers Cruickshanks, the real-life paddler, had already secured five Dusi gold medals before his 2014 victory. The DVD release includes a documentary on the true story and an interview with Freimond, offering deeper insight into the making of the film.
