The festive season brings joy for many, but it also creates stress for a notable number of people. Around 15 percent of Germans find Christmas overwhelming, often due to unrealistic expectations and packed schedules. Experts suggest that mindful planning and a shift in mindset can make the holidays more peaceful.

High expectations and the pressure to create a flawless celebration are among the biggest sources of holiday stress. Time constraints, family obligations, and conflicts add to the strain. Kira Liebmann, a family counselor and founder of the Academy for Family Coaching in Maisach, Bavaria, advises flexibility and honest discussions about how families want to spend their time together.

To ease the pressure, Liebmann recommends setting realistic goals and sharing responsibilities. Starting gift shopping early, keeping decorations simple, and preparing meals in advance can also reduce last-minute stress. She highlights the importance of taking breaks, practising self-care, and communicating openly with loved ones. Avoiding sensitive topics and setting clear boundaries can help manage family tensions. For deeper conflicts, professional support may provide long-term solutions. Liebmann encourages letting go of perfectionism and focusing on what truly matters—whether that’s spending quality time with family or enjoying simple traditions. By planning ahead and prioritising the essentials, the holidays can become a time of joy rather than exhaustion. Small adjustments, like simplifying celebrations or delegating tasks, can make a significant difference in reducing stress.
