How the Fediverse is reshaping social media with decentralized control
The Fediverse is growing as a decentralised alternative to mainstream social media. Built on open standards like ActivityPub, it connects thousands of independent servers where users control their data and interactions. Educators and civic groups are increasingly turning to this network for its focus on constructive discussion and privacy.
The Fediverse operates without centralised algorithms, meaning posts appear in chronological order rather than being filtered by engagement. This design encourages thoughtful debate, as divisive or emotionally charged content isn't artificially boosted. Users discover information by following hashtags or accounts, with Mastodon—its most popular microblogging platform—relying on this approach instead of algorithmic feeds.
All Fediverse services, including Mastodon, Pixelfed (photos), PeerTube (videos), and Friendica (social networking), work together seamlessly. A single account lets users interact across platforms without needing separate profiles. By the end of 2023, Mastodon alone had 8.76 million registered users and 1.54 million active monthly users, spread across roughly 16,700 independently run servers—up from just 2,608 instances in 2019.
Educators have already formed active communities here, such as #FediLZ (a teachers' discussion space), #Bildung (education), and #OER (open educational resources). The lack of algorithmic interference supports civic education, where open debate and critical thinking thrive. Users can also choose servers with specific privacy rules, giving them greater control over their data and online identity.
The Fediverse continues to expand, offering a decentralised space where discussion remains transparent and user-driven. Its growth in education and civic circles reflects a demand for platforms that prioritise privacy and meaningful exchange. With interoperable services and no centralised control, it presents an alternative to traditional social media structures.
