How Rivian's CEO turned a childhood passion for cars into an EV revolution
RJ Scaringe, the founder and CEO of Rivian, has built one of America's most talked-about electric vehicle companies. Born in Florida in 1983, he turned a lifelong love of cars into a business now known for its sustainable trucks and SUVs. His journey from engineering student to industry leader took less than two decades.
Scaringe grew up in Rockledge, Florida, where his fascination with automobiles began early. After earning a mechanical engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2005, he continued his studies at MIT. There, he completed both a master's and a Ph.D. by 2009.
That same year, he launched Mainstream Motors, a company focused on hybrid vehicles. Two years later, it was renamed Rivian Automotive, shifting its focus entirely to electric cars. The brand stayed under the radar until 2018, when it revealed two groundbreaking models: the R1T electric pickup and the R1S SUV.
Rivian's big break came in November 2021, when it listed shares on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Around the same time, the company committed 1% of its equity to create the Rivian Foundation, funding environmental and sustainability projects. It also pledged to power its Rivian Adventure Network—its charging infrastructure—with fully renewable energy, matching every kilowatt-hour used.
Today, Rivian stands out for its adventure-ready electric vehicles and strong sustainability goals. The company's public debut and foundation work mark key steps in Scaringe's vision. With a focus on renewable energy and innovation, Rivian continues to expand its influence in the automotive world.
