How Partition Shaped a Family's Legacy Through Food and Faith
The 1947 partition of India triggered one of history's largest mass migrations, displacing 14 million people almost overnight. Among them was the author's family, who lost everything and were forced to rebuild their lives from scratch. Their journey from Lahore to Kolkata and finally Mumbai shaped traditions that still endure today.
The author's paternal grandparents fled Lahore during the violent upheaval that claimed nearly two million lives. Stripped of their home and possessions, they eventually settled in Mumbai, where they had to start anew. Despite the hardship, they carried with them the flavours of Punjab, recreating dishes like butter chicken, sarson da saag, and makki di roti in their new surroundings.
Their daughter, the author's grandmother—affectionately called barima—had grown up in Amritsar, learning to cook from her mother. For over 50 years, she kept the family's culinary traditions alive, relying on slow-cooked meals rich with spices. The recipes adapted over time, blending local ingredients and even urban influences, like Indo-Chinese tandoori twists.
Beyond the kitchen, barima lived by simple yet disciplined routines. She massaged her face daily with Charmis cream and oiled her skin and hair, maintaining a natural glow. Her wardrobe was minimal but carefully chosen, following the principle: Buy Less, Choose Well and Make It Last. Faith also anchored her; she prayed for an hour each day, drawing strength from her beliefs.
The author now finds similar grounding in morning walks and meditation. These quiet rituals help them connect with the world and navigate life's challenges—echoing the resilience passed down through generations.
The partition forced millions, including the author's family, to rebuild their lives in unfamiliar cities. Yet, through food, faith, and frugality, they preserved their heritage while adapting to change. Today, those traditions remain a living link to a past both painful and cherished.
