How Johnson & Wales students turn bold ideas into thriving startups

Students at Johnson & Wales University are turning business ideas into reality with support from The Launch Pad. The programme provides mentorship, coaching, and free consultations to help budding entrepreneurs refine their plans. Over 30 online students are currently receiving guidance from Director Dr. Jeff Binczyk alone.

One of the first online students to join The Launch Pad was Randy Benitez '27', studying BSBA - Entrepreneurship. He pitched his product, ReWriter, at Sharkfest 2025 and secured third place. His success highlights how the programme helps students develop and present their ideas.

Nicole Ferraro '26' is working on a low-calorie, low-sugar, high-protein cookie. She's using The Launch Pad for market research and product development to bring her healthier snack to market. Meanwhile, Indigo Robinson '25', an M.S. - Nutrition graduate, is creating culturally responsive nutrition education materials through her business, Chewable Media.

Other students are tackling different challenges. Starlisha Keith '27', a B.S. - Digital Marketing and Social Media student, plans to teach young adults trades and build sustainable greenhouses in food deserts. Derrick J. Ford '26', an MBA - Event Leadership student, aims to open Philadelphia's first hybrid vinyl record store and juice bar, Blk & Brwn Vinyl & Juice. Charmaine Patterson '27', a BSBA - Business Administration student, is refining strategies for a Southern-style restaurant and a plant-based food waste product business.

The Launch Pad continues to support students in turning concepts into viable businesses. With free consultations and expert mentorship, the programme helps them attract investors and develop sustainable plans. More students are expected to benefit as the initiative grows.
