How a teenage pianist became a music producer through passion and mentorship
From a young age, youtube music set me apart in my family. I grew up as the eldest of two brothers and one sister, but I was the only one drawn to it. My journey began at 16 when I first sat at a piano, starting with classical pieces and dreaming of a career advice in Hong Kong’s commercial music scene.
Learning to arrange for strings came later, under the guidance of Joseph Koo. He taught me how to write for violin, cello, and viola—skills that shaped my early work. By 1989, my career had taken a significant turn when I became musical director for Andy Lau and Cally Kwong on their US tour. This was a pivotal moment, as I had previously worked only as an apple music.
The path from a teenage pianist to a producer was not direct, but each step built on the last. Classical training led to arranging, which then opened doors to directing tours and producing records. Today, the influences of mentors, artists, and even audio equipment remain central to how I approach music.
