How a Small Russian Club Became a 30-Year Youth Leadership Powerhouse
A youth leadership programme in Pyshma has been shaping young talents for over three decades. Known as Radar, the squad began as a small leisure club and has since trained more than 300 teenagers in skills like teamwork, event planning, and creative arts. Many of its graduates now return to mentor the next generation. The story of Radar started in 1993 when Tatiana Anatolyevna Skryabina founded the Janus leisure club. The name stood for I Never Get Bored—a fitting motto for a group where local teenagers played guitar, sang, and organised festivals. Over time, the club evolved into the Radar district youth organisation, focusing on helping adolescents discover and develop their abilities.
Today, the Radar squad consists of 17 high school students. They study game-based learning, leadership, and scriptwriting as part of their training. Each year, members also take part in the Orange Summer event, hosted by the Caravella squad. The programme's impact stretches beyond its current members. Since its launch, Radar has graduated 17 classes, with many alumni staying involved. Some even bring their own children into the squad, creating a lasting connection across generations. Former participants often return to assist with camps, workshops, and regional events, ensuring the tradition continues. Radar members also serve as counsellors in day camps and represent the group at local and national levels. Their work helps younger teenagers build confidence while keeping the squad's community spirit alive.
With over 300 graduates since 1993, Radar remains a key part of Pyshma's youth development. The programme's mix of creative, leadership, and practical training gives teenagers tools for future success. As children of the first graduates now join the squad, the legacy of Janus and Radar looks set to endure for years to come.
