"Suddenly, chaos had a name": Malte Zierden on his ADHD diagnosis - How a Pigeon Named Oskar Sparked a Global Animal Welfare Movement
Malte Zierden, a well-known animal welfare advocate with over a million social media followers, has spent years building sanctuaries and supporting global protection projects. His journey began with an unlikely friendship—a city pigeon named Oskar—and has since expanded into large-scale efforts, from Ukraine to the Peruvian rainforest.
Zierden also openly discusses his late ADHD diagnosis, using his platform to highlight neurodivergence and invisible conditions.
Zierden's path in animal activism started with Oskar, a pigeon he befriended in the city. That bond led him to create the first shelter space for Oskar, sparking a lifelong commitment. Since then, he has initiated or supported at least three major projects: a shelter in Berehowe, Ukraine, which now houses 300 dogs, 50 cats, and other animals; a rainforest protection effort in Peru through Wilderness International; and conservation work in Uganda.
His approach centres on compassion and recognising animals as sentient individuals. He rejects traditional activism in favour of treating animals as equals, a principle guiding his sanctuaries and campaigns. Beyond hands-on work, he uses Instagram and TikTok to raise awareness and fundraise for animals in need.
In a recent documentary, RE:TURN – ADHD as a Gamechanger, Zierden shares his experience of being diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood. He describes the struggle of intense longing for meaning paired with self-doubt, a feeling familiar to many with the condition. By speaking openly, he aims to reduce stigma and show how neurodivergence can shape perspectives—including his own work in animal welfare.
Zierden's efforts now span continents, from Ukrainian shelters to Peruvian rainforests. His advocacy bridges animal rights and neurodiversity, using his platform to push for visibility and change. With ongoing projects and a growing following, his work continues to expand in both reach and impact.
