Hong Kong college wins gold at maths awards
The 2025 Hang Lung Mathematics Awards has crowned its latest winners in a ceremony held on December 17. This year’s Gold Award went to Siu Man Li from Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Club College. The biennial competition, now in its 13th edition, continues to encourage young mathematicians across Hong Kong to explore creative research.
The awards, co-organised by Hang Lung Properties Limited and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), attracted nearly 100 teams from over 50 secondary schools. Since its launch in 2004, the competition has seen participation from more than 2,800 students across 200 schools.
Siu Man Li secured the Gold Award with a research report titled *Markov Chains Associated with Ultraspherical Polynomials: An Analysis of Weak Convergence and First Passage Time Functionals*. The Silver Award went to a team from St. Paul’s Co-educational College, comprising Augus Kui Lam Huang, Inna Belle Lee, Chun Lam Lo, Lok Hei Qiao, and Cheuk Lok Wong. Meanwhile, Edison Sze Ho Fu, Yun Tung Ko, Hoi Chun Puk, and Wai Kwan Yeung from Queen’s College received the Bronze Award. The event included a panel discussion on *Ubiquity of Mathematics: the Language of Discovery*. Hang Lung Properties donates HK$2.5 million for each competition, with HK$1 million allocated as prize money and the remaining funds supporting HKUST’s educational initiatives. The awards aim to inspire students to develop independent research skills and unlock their potential in mathematics.
The 2025 edition marks another milestone for the Hang Lung Mathematics Awards, reinforcing its role in fostering mathematical talent. With continued funding and participation, the competition remains a key platform for secondary students to engage in advanced research. The next edition is expected to build on this momentum in 2027.
