Teachers from Hesse triumphant at the Teaching Staff Award - Hesse teachers win top honors at Germany's 2025 Teaching Awards
Two teachers from Hesse have been recognised at the German Teaching Awards 2025. Alexandra Baum and Philipp Rohleder secured second place in the Innovative Teaching category for their creative podcast project. Meanwhile, Roland Struwe was named an Outstanding Educator, nominated by his own students for his dedication in the classroom.
Baum and Rohleder, both from Gerhart Hauptmann School in Griesheim, guided a group of 13th-grade German students in producing a 30-minute podcast. The project explored themes from Jenny Erpenbeck's novel Visitation, blending literary analysis with modern media. Their approach earned them second prize in the Innovative Teaching category.
Roland Struwe, a history and politics teacher at Eichendorff School in Kelkheim, was among ten educators honoured as Outstanding Educators. Students praised his deep subject knowledge, personal commitment, and tailored support for each pupil. The award highlights his impact on learning beyond standard lessons.
The Outstanding Educators category stands out because nominations come directly from students. This year's winners represent schools across Germany, though exact numbers of participating institutions remain unclear.
The awards celebrate both creative teaching methods and the strong bonds between educators and learners. Baum, Rohleder, and Struwe's achievements reflect the diverse ways teachers inspire students. Their recognition comes as part of a wider effort to highlight excellence in German schools.
