Hawaii launches organic waste recycling pilot and expands Social Security support
Hawaii residents in select areas will soon take part in a new recycling pilot programme. The initiative focuses on organic waste collection and begins on 1 April. Meanwhile, the state has outlined key tax exemptions and Social Security benefits for disabled and blind individuals.
At the same time, the Social Security Administration offers online tools to help estimate survivor benefits. These resources aim to simplify financial planning for eligible claimants.
The Honolulu Department of Environmental Services will launch a Green Recycling Organic Waste pilot project next month. Starting 1 April, residents on three-cart curbside routes in Waipahu, Nanakuli, Hawaii Kai, Mililani, Kailua, and Kalihi can place food waste in green carts. The project will be discussed at the next Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board Meeting, held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Hahaione Elementary School’s cafeteria.
The state Department of Taxation also provides financial relief for disabled and blind taxpayers. A $7,000 disability exemption is available for blind, deaf, or totally disabled individuals. To claim it, taxpayers must submit Form N-172 before filing taxes. The form requires personal details on page one and a physician or optometrist’s certification on page two.
For blind residents, a $140 refundable credit per qualifying individual can be claimed on Form N-101. Certification of legal blindness, using Form N-319B, must be provided by a licensed professional. More information is available on the Department of Taxation’s website (tax.hawaii.gov) or by calling 808-587-4242.
The Social Security Administration’s website (ssa.gov) offers calculators to estimate survivor benefits. Eligible widows or widowers can receive 71.5% of the decedent’s retirement benefit. This percentage increases incrementally, reaching 100% for claimants at or past full retirement age. Creating a ‘my Social Security’ account online allows users to access these tools more efficiently.
The organic waste pilot project will begin in six neighbourhoods on 1 April. Residents can learn more at the upcoming Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board Meeting. For those seeking tax exemptions or Social Security benefits, required forms and online tools are available through state and federal websites.
The Department of Taxation and Social Security Administration provide clear steps for claiming financial support. Deadlines and certifications must be followed to qualify for these programmes.
