Harsha Parekh Librarian Awards honour India's unsung literacy heroes in Mumbai

The first Harsha Parekh Librarian Awards (HPLA) took place in Mumbai this week, honouring five individuals and organisations for their work in library services. Hosted by the H T Parekh Foundation (HTPF), the event recognised those who have made a lasting impact on literacy and reading habits among children in India. The awards celebrate those who have made a lasting impact on literacy and reading habits among children in India.

The ceremony paid tribute to the late Professor Harsha S. Parekh, a respected figure in library sciences. Her name now lends itself to an award recognising innovation, community impact, and dedication in librarianship. Selection focused on outstanding contributions to promoting reading and improving library access.

Deepak S. Parekh, Chairman of the H T Parekh Foundation and former Chairman of HDFC Ltd, attended alongside family, friends, and colleagues of Professor Parekh. The event highlighted the role of librarians as educators and changemakers in shaping young readers' futures.

Ziaa Lalkaka, Executive Director and CEO of HTPF, spoke about the importance of librarians in fostering a lifelong love for books. The foundation plans to make the HPLA an annual event, ensuring continued recognition for those who quietly transform communities through libraries.

The inaugural HPLA awarded five winners for their efforts in nurturing reading habits and improving library services. The ceremony reinforced the foundation's commitment to supporting literacy across India. Future editions will build on this initiative to honour more librarians and their contributions.
