Hands-On Workshop Teaches Essential Care for Young Fruit Trees
A new workshop is offering hands-on training for anyone looking to care for young fruit trees. The course, organised with the Landscape Conservation Association 'Thuringian Rhön', will cover essential pruning and maintenance skills. It is open to home gardeners, traditional orchard owners, and those interested in sustainable orchard management.
The sessions will be led by Claudia Schneider, an orchard educator, and Robin Heyder, a fruit tree specialist. Both bring expertise in helping participants develop long-lasting, healthy trees that produce plenty of fruit.
The course kicks off on Friday evening, March 20, with an online theory session. Attendees will learn about tree physiology, proper care methods, and pruning techniques. The streamed format makes it easy for participants to join from home.
The following Saturday, the focus shifts to practical work in a traditional orchard near Dermbach. Here, attendees will use pruning shears and other tools to practise maintenance tasks under professional guidance. Traditional orchards, known as Streuobstwiesen, are community-managed meadows that preserve biodiversity and heritage fruit varieties.
By the end of the weekend, participants will have gained a solid foundation in pruning and general tree maintenance. The skills taught are designed to create low-maintenance, high-yielding fruit trees for both private gardens and shared landscapes.
The workshop combines online learning with hands-on experience in a real orchard setting. Participants will leave with the knowledge to care for young fruit trees effectively. Registration remains open to anyone interested in sustainable orchard practices or improving their own garden's fruit production.
