Hanau Celebrates Georg Corniclius’ 200th Birthday with Rare Art Exhibition
The Historical Museum Hanau is hosting a special exhibition to mark the 200th birthday of Hanau’s most celebrated 19th-century artist, Georg Cornicelius. Titled People, Tales, Myths: Discover Georg Corniclius, the show runs in the newly reopened attic of Schloss Philippsruhe. Visitors can explore his diverse artworks, from fairy tale scenes to historical paintings, with the human figure always at the heart of his art.
The exhibition brings together pieces from every stage of Corniclius’ career, including sketches, finished paintings, and studies by his students. Curated by the artist himself, the project offers a rare look into his creative process and influences. Alongside the display, the museum has organised lectures, guided tours, and workshops to delve deeper into Corniclius’ life, relationships, and artistic legacy.
The People, Tales, Myths exhibition runs as part of the museum’s wider offerings, including the Grimm’s Fairy Tale Realm and seasonal park access. With extended hours on Thursdays and weekends, visitors have ample opportunity to explore Corniclius’ art and the museum’s other attractions. The programme of talks and workshops further enriches the experience for those interested in 19th-century art and local history.
