Hamburg's Disadvantaged Kids Glide Into Free Ice Skating This Season
A partnership between Hamburger Arche and Hamburg's only ice arena is giving nearly 5,000 disadvantaged children the chance to skate for free this season. The EisArena in Planten un Blomen (Große Wallanlagen) has opened its doors to youngsters who might otherwise miss out on the experience. For many, it's their first time stepping onto the ice.
The initiative provides free skating sessions, including skate rentals, to children from low-income families. Nine-year-old Omid called the experience 'really fun, but also hard,' while Joyce, also nine, said she loved ice skating. Both were among the many trying it for the first time.
Hamburger Arche, which supports hundreds of young people daily, funds its work entirely through donations. The organisation focuses on offering recreational activities that help children develop skills, gain confidence, and form social bonds. This season's partnership with the EisArena ensures that nearly 5,000 children will benefit from the programme.
No other ice arenas in Hamburg are currently offering similar subsidised schemes. The EisArena remains the sole venue providing this opportunity to disadvantaged youngsters in the city.
The free skating sessions will continue throughout the season, giving children access to an activity they might not otherwise afford. Through donations and community support, Hamburger Arche and the EisArena are making ice skating a reality for thousands of young people in Hamburg.
