Halle (Saale) sets Germany's benchmark for high-speed school internet
Halle (Saale) leads Germany in high-speed school internet, with 92 percent of its schools now connected to gigabit networks. This places the city far ahead of other major urban centres, where coverage often falls below 50 percent. Meanwhile, two rural districts have also set a new benchmark by achieving full connectivity.
The success in Halle reflects Saxony-Anhalt's broader push for digital education. While many federal states struggle—Thuringia sits at 50 percent and Berlin at 70 percent—the city's near-universal coverage highlights the impact of focused investment. Experts stress that fast internet alone isn't enough; trained teachers, IT support, and updated teaching methods must follow.
In rural areas, Schaumburg (Lower Saxony) and Saale-Orla (Thuringia) stand out as exceptions. Both districts have reached 100 percent gigabit connectivity in schools, a rare feat in Germany's countryside. Most rural regions lag behind, with 819 communities still lacking any gigabit-equipped schools.
Halle's approach has become a model for other municipalities. By prioritising long-term planning and clear targets, the city demonstrates how determined expansion can close digital gaps. The results position it—and the two rural districts—as national leaders in school infrastructure.
The achievements in Halle, Schaumburg, and Saale-Orla show what targeted efforts can deliver. With gigabit coverage now a reality in these areas, students and educators gain access to faster, more reliable digital tools. The next challenge will be ensuring that hardware upgrades are matched by training and support to fully realise the benefits.
