Günter M. Ziegler re-elected as FU President - Günter M. Ziegler secures third term as Free University of Berlin president

Professor Günter M. Ziegler has been re-elected president of Free University of Berlin for a third term. The mathematician secured a strong majority in the vote, with 39 out of 59 members of the expanded Academic Senate supporting his candidacy. His new four-year term will begin on 6 July 2026.

Ziegler, born in Munich in 1963, initially studied mathematics and physics in his hometown before completing a doctorate at MIT. He later earned a second doctorate in 1989 from Free University's own Mathematical Institute. First appointed president in 2018, he was the only candidate in this election after another contender withdrew.

The Academic Senate now includes 61 members, representing faculty, staff, students, and employees. Their decision ensures Ziegler will lead the institution as it faces significant challenges in the years ahead. Following the result, he thanked the Senate for their continued trust.

Free University of Berlin currently teaches around 37,000 students this semester. Ziegler's re-election comes as the university prepares for a period of strategic decisions under his leadership.

Ziegler's third term will extend his presidency to at least a decade. His experience in both academia and university governance positions him to address the institution's upcoming priorities. The re-election confirms his standing within the expanded Senate and the wider university community.
