Guernsey's dialysis unit battles staff shortages and supply delays amid refurbishments
Guernsey's dialysis unit is facing ongoing staffing shortages and supply chain disruptions. The problems have led to increased reliance on agency workers and remote support from a London NHS trust. Patients needing treatment on Alderney will now be sent to Guernsey, with travel and accommodation costs covered for the first two months.
The unit's struggles began after the matron left in August 2024. Since then, long-term sickness has forced greater use of temporary staff. To ease pressure, London's Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is providing remote assistance.
Supply chain issues have also caused delays in delivering essential medical supplies. Health and Social Care (HSC) is now reviewing whether critical items should be sourced locally instead. Further strain will come from planned refurbishments, including major flooring works, which will disrupt both staff and patients. Patients from Alderney requiring dialysis will be relocated to Guernsey for treatment. HSC has confirmed it will fund their travel and accommodation for the initial two months of their stay.
The dialysis unit's challenges are set to continue as refurbishments add to existing staffing and supply problems. Patients from Alderney will now receive care in Guernsey, with HSC covering their relocation costs for the first eight weeks. The review of local supply options aims to reduce future delays in receiving critical consumables.
