Gschwader School's 11.57M franc upgrade transforms learning and sustainability
Gschwader School in Uster has begun a major expansion and renovation project. The work includes modernising the gymnasium, upgrading outdoor spaces, and expanding childcare facilities. The upgrades aim to improve sustainability, accessibility, and learning environments for students and the community.
The project officially started with a groundbreaking ceremony on March 24, 2026. Residents had already approved the 11.57 million Swiss franc budget in a public vote on November 24, 2024, with 69% in favour.
The gymnasium will receive key improvements, including better earthquake resistance, enhanced energy efficiency, and a new photovoltaic system to generate clean electricity. Meanwhile, outdoor areas are being redesigned with a covered walkway, new steps that double as seating, additional playground equipment, and more green spaces. These spaces will remain open to the public outside school hours. Inside, the school is expanding its after-school care programme to meet rising demand. New childcare areas are being added, along with barrier-free access provided by a new elevator. School President Patricia Bernet has highlighted the importance of outdoor learning and diverse educational environments as part of the modernisation effort. The upgraded facilities are set to open in early 2027, offering improved sports, childcare, and learning spaces for the community.
Once completed, the renovated Gschwader School will feature sustainable infrastructure, accessible childcare, and enhanced outdoor areas. The project reflects the community's investment in education and public spaces, with completion expected by early 2027.
