Henriette Held and Luis Bobga form new leadership duo of Green Youth - Green Youth Elects Bobga and Held as New Leaders, Pledging Focus on Climate Justice and Social Issues
The Green Youth, the youth wing of Germany's Green Party, has elected Jakob Bobga and Henriette Held as their new leaders. Both bring unique backgrounds and perspectives to the role, with a shared focus on climate justice and social issues.
Bobga, a migration researcher from Osnabrück, brings a strong focus on social security and human rights to the table. He has previously served on the federal board of the Green Youth and expects the Greens to be 'uncomfortable but self-critical' in their stance on human rights and solidarity.
Held, a law student from Greifswald, emphasizes the connection between the climate crisis and social justice. She has previously served as the state chairperson of the Green Youth in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Both leaders are influenced by the climate protection movement Fridays for Future.
The election comes after a period of internal and external controversies for the Green Youth, including the resignation of the entire federal board in 2024. Jette Nietzard, the previous co-spokesperson, stepped down after supporting Luis Bobga, who later withdrew his candidacy in favor of Jakob Blasel. Nietzard had advocated for a left-wing profile of the Green Youth, facing criticism within the party.
Bobga and Held take over the leadership of the Green Youth at a time when many members, including Held herself, are disappointed with the party's recent politics. They aim to refocus the party on climate justice, social security, and human rights, drawing inspiration from the Fridays for Future movement.
