Green Dot Schools Wins $8.8M Grant to Transform South LA Student Futures
Green Dot Public Schools has secured a major grant to boost academic support for students in South Los Angeles. The funding, awarded by the U.S. Department of Education, will help 1,579 pupils from low-income and first-generation families. The initiative aims to smooth their path from middle school to high school and beyond.
The GEAR UP grant, totaling $8,842,400 in federal funds, will cover half the project's cost. Green Dot and its partners will match the remaining 50 percent. This seven-year programme focuses on eliminating the need for remedial courses in maths and English.
Ánimo James B. Taylor Charter Middle School will head a group of five middle schools in the consortium. Each student will receive personalised support through a dedicated College and Career Success Advisor. These advisors will guide them through key academic transitions, from middle school into high school. The grant will fund tutoring, mentoring, and family education programmes. Students will also access college and career workshops, financial literacy training, and dual enrolment opportunities. Families will get resources to help with college planning, financial aid, and other important milestones, reinforcing support both at school and at home.
The project will run for seven years, providing long-term academic and career guidance. Over 1,500 students in South Los Angeles will benefit from the extra resources. The goal is to ensure they enter high school and higher education without needing remedial classes.
