Greek Students Gain Rare US Research Access Through URIUS Initiative
A unique initiative, URIUS, is connecting Greek students with research opportunities in the USA. Led by professors Dimitris Kollias and Evangelos Delikouras, along with NTUA's Yannis Bourbakis, the project offers summer internships funded personally by Greek professors living in the US.
URIUS, a 'relatively crazy idea' turned successful, is making waves in academic circles. It offers NTUA students the chance to work in US labs linked to industry and current challenges. The selection process is rigorous, choosing only the cream of the crop from NTUA.
This year, three US-based professors - Dionisios Vlachos, Marianthi Ierapetritou, and Matthaios Koffas - hosted five chemical engineering students from NTUA. Each scholarship was personally financed by the hosting professors, amounting to approximately $8,000 per student. One student, Erifyli Christoforidi, had the opportunity to join a lab tied to industry and real-world problems through URIUS.
URIUS is bridging the gap between Greek students and US research opportunities. With the support of dedicated professors, NTUA students are gaining valuable experience and exposure to international academia. The project's success has sparked interest in expanding its reach in the future.
