Göttingen launches 2040 Mobility Master Plan with public input and EU-backed sustainability goals

Göttingen has begun work on a Mobility Master Plan to shape the city's transport future up to 2040. The project officially started on October 2, 2025, with a constitutive meeting. Once finished, the plan will guide all future mobility-related construction and planning in the city.

The city is developing the plan as a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), following EU guidelines. Funding of 162,000 euros comes from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. The final version is expected by the end of 2026.

Göttingen's administration is collaborating with three planning firms: Planersocietà, Gertz Gutsche Rümenapp, and Tollerort. A project-accompanying working group will meet three more times to discuss progress and gather input. Public involvement is a key part of the process. The first traffic forum for the Mobility Master Plan is set for November 17, 2025. The plan's goal is to introduce measures that bring the greatest benefits to the city and its residents.

The completed Mobility Master Plan will serve as the foundation for all future transport projects in Göttingen. Residents and stakeholders will have opportunities to contribute through public forums and working group meetings. The finalised plan is due by late 2026.
