Global Accreditation awarded to Civil Engineering program at Eastern Washington University
In a monumental stride for engineering education in Bangladesh, the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering programme at East West University (EWU) has received official accreditation from the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE). This accreditation places EWU's civil engineering programme among the ranks of top engineering schools worldwide, recognised under the Washington Accord.
The Washington Accord is an international agreement among accrediting bodies for engineering education, which mutually recognises the substantial equivalence of accredited engineering degree programmes. As of 2025, countries like Bangladesh have attained full signatory status, while Kenya is a provisional signatory. Other full member countries include Australia, Canada, China, Ireland, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, the UK, and the USA, among others.
This accreditation ensures that EWU civil engineering graduates will be acknowledged as professional engineers in signatory countries across the globe. The recognition under the Washington Accord significantly enhances the career opportunities for EWU civil engineering graduates, as they can seek employment, further education, and professional registration in other signatory countries with relative ease.
The visit by a delegation from BAETE, which included Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr M Ashik Mosaddik, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Professor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Shams Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering Professor Dr Ahmed Wasif Reza, and other esteemed members, served as a symbolic commemoration of the university's commitment to providing high-quality engineering education.
The special visit held at the Department of Civil Engineering on 9 July 2025 was warmly welcomed by Dr Naimul Haque, Chairperson of the Department of Civil Engineering, along with faculty members of the department. The visit marked a significant milestone in EWU's journey towards becoming a globally recognised institution for engineering education.
The accreditation reaffirms EWU's standing as a provider of engineering education that meets international standards. It underscores the university's ability to produce graduates who are recognised as professional engineers in signatory countries under the Washington Accord. The accreditation aims to prepare EWU civil engineering students to thrive in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
The accreditation process emphasises outcomes-based education (OBE), ensuring that graduates are prepared with strong practical problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and innovation capabilities, matching international engineering education benchmarks. This recognition encourages national economic transformation and positions engineering graduates as leaders in innovation and technology globally.
In essence, a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from EWU, accredited under the Washington Accord standards, assures that the degree is deemed equivalent to those from top engineering schools worldwide, enabling graduates to work and contribute professionally across all member countries without additional credential barriers.
The visit reinforced the university's position as a leader in engineering education, recognised both nationally and internationally. The warm welcome extended to the delegation highlights the pride and commitment of the Department of Civil Engineering towards its accredited programme. The international accreditation further underscores East West University's dedication to offering globally recognised engineering education.
The accreditation of East West University's Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering program by the Washington Accord signifies that the graduates are recognized as professional engineers in various signatory countries worldwide, opening up opportunities for further education and employment. This prestigious accreditation also signifies East West University's commitment to education-and-self-development, providing students with the skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
