Gießen’s Library Revives Storytelling Magic for Seniors on National Reading Day

Gießen City Library brought stories to life for seniors across care homes on Germany’s National Reading Aloud Day. Volunteers read fairy tales, poems, and myths in multiple languages, creating moments of connection and nostalgia. The event marked the return of a beloved tradition first launched through the Buchkreislauf project years ago.

At the Evangelical Johannesstift Nursing Home, Selma Lagerlöf’s The Legend of the Christmas Rose held listeners spellbound. Meanwhile, residents at Caritas House Maria Frieden eagerly followed tales from Greek mythology. Each reading session was tailored to the audience, with some seniors requesting stories in their mother tongue.

The event revived a tradition that began with the Buchkreislauf cooperation project, reconnecting seniors with the joy of storytelling. Residents left with shared memories, renewed conversations, and a hunger for more tales. Gießen City Library’s initiative proved once again how stories can bridge generations and cultures.
