Ghana’s Historic Schools Still Lead After a Century of Excellence
Ghana is home to some of the oldest and most prestigious secondary schools in West Africa. These institutions have shaped education in the country for over a century. Many were founded during colonial times and remain leading centres of learning today.
The oldest of these schools is Mfantsipim, established in 1876. Located in Cape Coast, it holds the title of Ghana’s first second-cycle institution. Nearly three decades later, Wesley Girls’ High School opened its doors in 1884, becoming one of the country’s top-performing schools.
From Mfantsipim’s founding in 1876 to Accra High School’s establishment in 1923, these schools have stood the test of time. They continue to play a key role in Ghana’s education system. Many remain among the most respected institutions in the country today.
