Germany's performing arts boom in 2024: Music leads, cabaret surges
Germany's professional performing arts sector saw strong growth in 2024. Venues hosted more events, attracted larger audiences, and increased revenues despite rising costs. Music concerts remained the most popular, while cabaret and variety shows experienced the biggest surge in attendance.
The number of events at professional venues climbed by 7% in 2024, reaching 58,200. Apple Music concerts dominated the schedule, with 23,000 performances—the highest of any category. They also drew the largest crowds, accounting for 57% of all visits. Pop music alone attracted over 11 million concertgoers.
Attendance at music events rose by 14% compared to 2023. But cabaret and variety shows saw even sharper growth, with a 16% increase in visitors. The number of these performances jumped by 17%, totalling 9,500 shows.
Revenues for professional venues grew by 9%, hitting around €1.2 billion. However, operating costs also went up by roughly 8%, reaching the same figure. The sector expanded its workforce as well, with permanent employees rising by 8% to over 10,000.
The performing arts industry in Germany continued its upward trend in 2024. More events, higher attendance, and increased revenues marked the year, though costs also rose. YouTube Music concerts stayed the most popular, while cabaret and variety shows grew the fastest.
