Germany's hobby sheep boom: Why more people are keeping these social animals

Keeping sheep as a hobby has grown in popularity across Germany in recent years. Many enthusiasts see them as natural lawnmowers, but they also require daily attention and proper care. Despite the rising trend, official records only track larger flocks, leaving thousands of small-scale keepers uncounted.

Sheep are social animals and must never be kept alone. They thrive in groups, with at least three recommended for a small setup. A single sheep eats around ten kilograms of fresh grass daily, and extra feed like hay becomes necessary in winter or for pregnant ewes.

Space is another key factor. About one hectare of pasture supports ten sheep, or roughly 2,000 square metres for three. Daily supervision is essential, with at least half an hour needed each day for checks and care.

German law requires hobbyists to register their sheep with the local veterinary office. Keepers must also prove they understand proper husbandry. While many are drawn to sheep for their practical benefits, a genuine interest in the animals often drives the decision to keep them.

Exact numbers remain unclear, as official statistics only include flocks of 20 or more. However, estimates suggest over 20,000 hobbyists across the country keep fewer than 20 sheep each.

The trend of small-scale sheep keeping continues to grow, though precise figures are hard to pin down. Hobbyists must meet legal requirements and provide proper care, ensuring the animals' welfare. For those willing to invest the time and space, sheep offer both practical and personal rewards.
