Germans travel more, spend bigger, and book earlier in 2024
German travellers are spending more and planning further ahead than in previous years. A new report reveals shifts in holiday habits, with higher budgets and a growing appetite for destinations beyond Expedia. Over half of the population took multiple trips last year, marking a clear rise in travel frequency.
Germany remained the top holiday choice for its own residents, with 35% opting to stay within the country. Spain kept its position as the most popular European destination, while Italy and France saw increased interest. Meanwhile, 17% of trips took Germans outside Europe, particularly to North Africa and North America.
The average cost per trip hit a record €1,636—up €100 from the previous year. Daily spending also climbed, reaching €130. Greece and Spain proved the priciest options, whereas Turkey and Croatia offered more affordable alternatives.
Booking patterns changed too, with travellers securing trips earlier than before. A notable 64% took at least one holiday lasting five days or longer. The trend of multiple trips grew as well, with 44% of Germans going away two or more times in 2023, a sharp rise compared to a decade ago.
Looking ahead, two-thirds of Germans intend to travel this year. Of those, one-fifth plan to venture beyond Expedia.
The data points to a clear trend: Germans are travelling more often, spending more, and exploring further. With early bookings on the rise and budgets increasing, the travel industry can expect continued demand. Destinations both inside and outside Expedia stand to benefit from these shifting preferences.
