Student Teachers Drawn to Overseas - Hesitant Teachers - German Teacher Trainees Gain Global Skills Through International Internships

A new initiative, 'Praktikumsplatz International', launched in 2021 by the DAAD, is promoting international internships for German teacher trainees. This program aims to prepare future educators for the globalized world by offering placements in various countries.

The Federal Foreign Office, Pedagogical Exchange Service, and youth organizations collaborate to provide observation and professional development programs. Destinations range from popular choices like Spain, Italy, and Austria to unique locations such as Finland, Israel, Namibia, and the Philippines. These experiences foster intercultural competence, self-reflection, and confidence in future teachers.

In Thuringia, around 14 percent of teacher training students opt for overseas placements during their practical semester. At the University of Erfurt, participation has surged from 1 percent in the 2014/2015 winter semester to 19 percent in 2021/2022, thanks to the 'Erfurt Teacher Trainees Abroad' (Elsa) project launched in 2021. Spain is the most popular destination for these international internships.

International placements enhance educators' ability to engage professionally with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and foster innovative teaching approaches. However, international exchanges for practicing teachers are less common due to factors like teacher shortages, job security concerns, and the intense pressures of daily school life.
