Fewer Germans Study Abroad - 20% Decline in the USA Alone - German Students Abroad Decline in 2023, but Austria Gains Popularity
Fewer German students chose to study abroad in 2023, with numbers falling slightly overall. The total dropped by 1% to 137,000, according to the latest figures from the Statistical Federal Office. However, trends varied sharply by destination, with some countries seeing steep declines while others grew in popularity.
The biggest drop came in the United States, where German student numbers plunged by 20% to 6,900. The U.K. also saw a sharp fall, losing 13% of its German students, leaving just 8,400 enrolled. The Netherlands followed with a 7% decrease, hosting 21,100 students.
Meanwhile, Austria remained the top choice, attracting 40,700 German students—an 8% rise from the previous year. Switzerland saw a modest increase of 1%, reaching 12,600 students. Across Europe, 70% of German students stayed within the EU for their studies.
Human medicine continued to dominate as the preferred field, particularly in Bulgaria, where 82% of German students pursued medical degrees.
The overall decline in German students abroad was driven mainly by falling numbers in the United States, U.K., and Netherlands. Despite this, Austria's growing appeal helped offset some of the losses. The total figure for 2023 settled at 137,000, just slightly below the previous year's count.
