Doing Math on the Tablet - "Math is My Favorite Subject" - German schools embrace digital tools to revolutionize math education
Digital tools are transforming how math is taught and learned in German schools. Platforms like bettermarks and Mathway now help students practise at their own pace, while new diagnostic tools spot learning gaps faster than ever before. Teachers and pupils alike are embracing these technologies, with one state even offering free access for all schools.
The bettermarks system has become a key part of math lessons in Rhineland-Palatinate. Over half of the state’s math teachers are using it this year, alongside more than 2,300 educators and around 68,000 students. The platform adapts to each pupil’s ability, giving instant feedback and extra help when needed.
Students like Alisa and Sophie enjoy working with bettermarks and Mathway, finding the interactive lessons engaging. Joel, another pupil, describes bettermarks as easy to navigate, with useful features that step in when he gets stuck. Meanwhile, teacher Pia Lupa credits her school’s self-directed approach—supported by these tools—for strong Abitur results. A new diagnostic tool, online-BKR, is also making waves. Developed by the Deutsche Stiftung Lesen and the Reinhard Mohn Foundation, it can assess early math difficulties in minutes rather than weeks. A pilot for first and second graders has already been completed, showing its potential to catch problems early.
Rhineland-Palatinate’s decision to provide bettermarks free through its education portal reflects growing confidence in digital learning. With thousands of teachers and students already using the system, its impact on math performance is being closely watched. The online-BKR tool adds another layer, offering quick and precise insights into where young learners need support.
