German school packs 300 backpacks to transform lives in Malawi
A school in Germany has set a new record for its annual charity drive. Marien Realschule Kaufbeuren collected and packed 300 backpacks filled with essential supplies for children in Malawi. The project, now in its third year, supports the international aid organisation Mary’s Meals. The donation drive began in July under the coordination of teacher Monika Sonderegger. Students gathered school supplies, hygiene products, and clothing over the summer months. Each item was carefully sorted and stored by entire classes before packing started in September. The backpacks followed a checklist provided by Mary’s Meals, ensuring they met the needs of schoolchildren in Malawi. Many families there cannot afford basic supplies like pencil cases, which often prevents children from attending school. This year’s total of 300 backpacks surpassed the previous record of 270, marking the school’s largest contribution yet. Founded in Scotland, Mary’s Meals provides daily meals to over two million children worldwide. Alongside food aid, the charity distributes backpacks filled with essentials to support education in some of the world’s poorest regions. The 300 backpacks will now be shipped to Malawi, where they will be given to children in need. The project highlights ongoing efforts by Marien Realschule to improve access to education through practical support. Mary’s Meals will continue distributing meals and supplies to vulnerable communities across Africa.
