Georgia's Young Storytellers Shine in 2026 PBS KIDS Writers Contest
Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) has opened its annual PBS KIDS Writers Contest for 2026. The competition invites young students across the state to submit their own illustrated stories. Prizes and online recognition await the winners in each grade category.
The contest is open to Georgia pupils from kindergarten through third grade. Entries can take many forms—fact or fiction, poetry, or even graphic novels. Judges will look for originality, creative expression, storytelling skill, and how well illustrations fit the text.
Participants have until Tuesday, 31 March to submit their work. GPB provides resources to help, including a Writers Guide and full contest rules, all available at gpb.org/writers-contest. Local PBS stations, such as WPBS and WVPB, organise similar contests nationwide. In 2025, WPBS named grade-level winners like Lucie S. (Kindergarten, Jack's Great Adventure), Gwendolyn S. (Grade 1, A Trip To The North Pole), Charlotte S. (Grade 2, The People's Palace), and Josiah M. (Grade 3, The Boy and The Wolf). Each station selects its own winners, with no single national champion. GPB will honour its 2026 winners at an awards ceremony held at its Atlanta headquarters. The best entries will also be featured on GPB's website.
The contest runs from January to late March each year. Winning stories gain recognition and prizes, while all participants receive encouragement to develop their writing and artistic talents. Full details and submission guidelines remain accessible online throughout the competition period.
