Germany's rural areas face a severe shortage of doctors, leading to concerns about healthcare access. In a unique turn of events, Umes Arunagirinathan, a cardiac surgeon, is retraining as a rural general practitioner, bringing his expertise to a community in need.

Arunagirinathan, who fled Sri Lanka's civil war at age 12 and settled in Germany, completed his secondary education in Hamburg before embarking on a medical career. The specifics of his medical education remain unclear, with searches not revealing the name of the institution where he studied medicine, only that he completed his Abitur in Hamburg.

Now, he is in the midst of a two-year residency in general medicine at a family practice in Heiligenrode, Lower Saxony. This transition from specialist to generalist role is proving rewarding for Arunagirinathan, who appreciates the improved work-life balance, allowing him to return home every evening.

In his new role, Arunagirinathan values the lack of rigid hierarchies in rural practice. He connects with his patients on a personal level, addressing them informally and going by Dr. Umes.
