From cancer survivor to UPSC success: How Sanjay Dehariya defied all odds

Sanjay Dehariya, a 32-year-old from Chhattisgarh's Mahasamund district, has cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025 with rank 946. His journey was marked by extraordinary challenges, including a gruelling battle with cancer that delayed his dream of becoming a civil engineer for nearly a decade. Despite four cancer diagnoses and years of treatment, he secured success in his third attempt at the exam.

Dehariya's ambition to join the civil services began early. As a schoolboy, he was inspired by a visit from a senior IAS officer. But his path was far from smooth. Growing up in a family of small farmers, he faced severe financial struggles, with his mother often skipping meals to feed her children.

In his final year of college, tragedy struck when he was diagnosed with cancer in the parotid glands. Between 2012 and 2018, he fought the disease four times, undergoing intensive treatment at Mumbai's Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital. The illness stole eight precious years from his studies and career plans.

After recovering, Dehariya refused to abandon his dream. He resumed his UPSC preparations, determined to succeed. His persistence paid off when he cleared the exam in his third attempt. Now, he aims for a posting in the Indian Revenue Service under the Scheduled Caste reservation. Once in service, he plans to focus on improving health and education systems.

Dehariya's achievement comes as part of the UPSC 2025 results, where 958 candidates passed the final stage. His story stands out not just for his rank but for the resilience he showed in overcoming cancer and poverty. With his appointment, he now looks forward to contributing to sectors close to his heart—health and education.
