Got AI on the brain? You're not alone — at least, if you're a student majoring in Mechatronics. That's because a whopping 75% of these tech enthusiasts use AI on a regular basis. On the flip side, that number drops significantly to around half for engineers focusing on infrastructure and the environment, according to a recent survey by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE).
This survey, which quizzed some 23,000 students across German and Austrian universities, reveals that AI is most commonly deployed for research and translation tasks. About 60% of Mechatronics majors, for instance, use AI in their research at least once a week. But only a third of the students majoring in German Studies feel the need for AI's help in such tasks.
AI technology might help with research, but it's not quite ready for a starring role in literary projects, says one study author Marc Hüsch. In his view, AI's role as a writing partner, or even a ghostwriter, is limited among today's students. More than one-third of students have never used AI to create text.
The survey respondents shared their opinions about the AI offerings at universities, too, and the feedback wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. When grading the AI skill-building resources, students gave an average score of 2.7 out of 5. Hüsch calls for universities to revamp their offerings, ensuring equal opportunities for students to capitalize on AI's benefits.
