Freiburg and Southern Denmark Universities Strengthen Research Ties in Landmark Deal
The University of Freiburg has signed a four-year strategic partnership with the University of Southern Denmark. The agreement, finalised on 25 March 2026, aims to boost cooperation in research, teaching, and academic exchange. Both institutions have worked together since 2020 through the EPICUR alliance, producing nearly 200 joint scientific publications.
The new partnership will focus on medical technology research while expanding student and staff mobility. Plans include joint research projects, fresh funding schemes, and broader exchange programmes. A steering committee will manage the collaboration and launch additional initiatives over the coming years.
Shared teaching formats and doctoral programmes are also in development. Workshops and working groups are already set for 2026. The goal is to improve Freiburg's standing in European research by strengthening ties with its Danish counterpart. The two universities have built a foundation through their EPICUR membership. Their existing cooperation has led to nearly 200 co-authored papers, setting a strong precedent for future work.
The deal runs for four years, with structured plans to deepen collaboration. Research, teaching, and mobility will remain central to the partnership. The universities expect the agreement to enhance Freiburg's international research position within Europe.
