Free Music Education Transforms Thousands of Young Lives Across England
A charity called the Music in Secondary Schools Trust (MiSST) has spent the last decade bringing free music education to thousands of young people. Founded by former teacher Truda White, the programme now supports 29 schools across England. Its work has drawn backing from high-profile figures like composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and violinist Nicola Benedetti.
The trust began after Truda White transformed her Islington school with a dedicated music programme. Her success caught the attention of Andrew Lloyd Webber, whose foundation now funds the scheme. Each year, the Andrew Lloyd Webber Programme covers £200 per child for instruments and lessons as they start secondary school.
MiSST partners with schools in London, Warwickshire, Oldham, Middlesbrough, Dorset, Bolton, Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire. At Frederick Bremer School in Walthamstow, pupils in Years 7 and 8 receive free tuition in violin, viola, and flute. The school's Ofsted rating has since improved, with Lord Lloyd Webber publicly supporting the initiative. Beyond classroom lessons, MiSST runs a free Saturday school where students can join orchestras, choirs, or study conducting and music production. The trust also collaborates with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. In April 2023, 600 students marked MiSST's 10th anniversary with a performance at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Nicola Benedetti has served as a patron since 2016, helping raise the charity's profile. Her involvement has reinforced MiSST's mission to make music education accessible to all, regardless of background.
Since its launch, MiSST has provided instruments and lessons to thousands of pupils in underserved areas. The programme's expansion now reaches schools in multiple regions, with ongoing support from arts leaders and educators. Free access to music training remains central to its work in secondary education.
